Are you ready for 8K? While the format has been gaining traction recently with the likes of Red releasing their 8K Dragon, it’s nice to see a company like Panavision jump into the 8K game. Of course their only making that leap with the assistance of Red sensors, but regardless, their knowledge and expertise in the lens market is what makes the difference. You can have the highest resolution sensor in the world, but if your glass isn’t designed for it you won’t be getting the most out of your image.
What makes this camera unique, besides the 8K shooting resolution, is the fact that it is the first time Panavision, Red and Light Iron Color have worked together to make a camera. It has never been done in the history of Panavision according to the promotional video on Panavision’s website.
While I will never own a camera like this, as Panavision doesn’t sell it’s cameras, only rents, it makes me excited for the future of cinema and the future of 8K technology. I bought my first high resolution DSLR in 2009 with the Canon 5D Mark II. That camera could shoot 1080P/30, a big deal back in the day. Last year, six years later, I bought the Panasonic Lumix GH4, a camera capable of shooting true 4K/24. I have no doubt in my mind that five or so years from now I will be shooting with a 8K/30 capable camera that costs around $2,000.
