If you’re a listener to the Around the Lens podcast, then you likely have heard Carl Johnson. He’s been a show regular since the beginning, speaking from his home in Anchorage, Alaska.
Carl is a nature photographer with a touch of photojournalist. In 2016, he published the award winning and gorgeous photo book, Where Water is Gold, which if you haven’t got a copy of yet – get it now. The subject of the book, the area that the potential Pebble Mine project will effect, might once again be under threat.
Back when I first moved to Alaska, Carl was kind enough to let me tag along on a couple of his late night aurora (Northern Lights) photo trips and teach me the tricks of the trade. I got some amazing captures, but nothing like the images that he takes on the regular.

The aurora borealis, or northern lights, is one of those things that are easily explained by science, but still instill in us a sense of magic and mystery. This fifth edition of the calendar celebrates the aurora borealis as viewed in various locations throughout Alaska, and includes images captured in Iceland.
