ATL panelist Rick Friedman was the subject of a short documentary by the Digital Photo Academy & Celebrating Senior Shutterbugs. It’s an incredible interview and it was seriously inspiring! This man has been behind the camera for over five decades, capturing every U.S. President from Carter to today. What a career it’s just mind-blowing. He shared a story about his first big break: photographing Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops, which, purely by chance, ended up being the last photo taken of the maestro alive. Beyond luck, Rick stresses that his success comes down to extreme preparation; he preaches doing your homework on every subject and always having a “plan for failure” ahead of time. He also dives into his technical wizardry, explaining how he uses quick, controlled lighting setups for everything from portraits of Harvard academics to complex commercial shoots, like the high-pressure 21-second window he had to photograph a new Amtrak train with fireworks.
