This is usually the time of the year when different news outlets and other organizations publish their top photos of the year lists but it’s crazy to think this isn’t just the end of a year, but the end of a decade. So when Buzzfeed published their top photos of the decade it took me back a little and made me think about what our industry has covered as a collective whole throughout this generation.
The collection of photos presented here provides a pretty comprehensive overview of the major news events and disasters that occurred throughout the past ten years. While the majority of the images feature death and destruction, war and despair, there are quite a few that highlight important, but perhaps less sobering shots, some are even a little light hearted.
For instance the shot of Elon Musk’s Tesla car shot from space is pretty cool and highlights a significant scientific achievement. The shot of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi applauding President Donald Trump highlight sjowcases the strong political divide and the roller coaster that has been occurring in politics. These images help break the trend of war, death and destruction featured heavily in the series, but these images are important to show and demonstrate that there are serious issues going on in our society that need to be addressed.
The most impactful, at least for me, as a father, are the images of dead or sick children. Thankfully, these images are obscured unless you click on them, but they really show how brutal and unforgiving our world is and how important it is that we do what we can to protect the youngest, most defenseless and innocent among us.
